General
Are your systems reliable?
Yes, very! We are installed today in several of Sweden's fastest sawmills and largest pallet manufacturers, with significantly better availability and significantly less need for maintenance than even the previously so well-known industrial dot printers. This is on a completely different level! Contact us and we will put you in touch with references!
Do inkjet printers require a lot of maintenance in dusty environments?
No, the system is very reliable. Thanks to a long throw distance, the printhead can be placed behind a robust mechanical guard, which minimises fiber build-up and protects against damage. We have printers in full production just half a metre from the trimmers that are easily cleaned about every other week.
How complicated is it to adapt to the EUDR requirements?
It is extremely simple. Instead of ordering new physical branding irons, you just change the layout in the software. You can generate unique QR codes for every single package fully automatically.
Is the technology difficult for operators to learn?
No, the interface is similar to a smartphone. Changing the marking is done with a few taps on a screen instead of mechanically changing red-hot stamps.
Can the system be integrated with our existing business system (ERP)?
Yes, the printer can retrieve data automatically for each order, which eliminates manual handling and ensures that the right QR code ends up on the right product.
How do I know that your product suits us and works in our production?
We can carry out print trials directly on your own material in our lab in Mölndal. The tests are performed at realistic line speeds and throw distances, to replicate how the marking will look in your actual production environment. If needed, we are also happy to come out to you and carry out trial installations on site, directly on your production line.
Where are your products manufactured and developed?
Our printers are developed by GSI's development team locally here in Sweden, in Mölndal to be precise. The core of the development team consists of engineers with close to 20 years each in the marking industry and industrial inkjet printers. The printers are manufactured at GSI's headquarters in Atlanta, USA. That is also where our unique inks are developed and manufactured!
How do I apply for a job with you?

As we plan to grow further, we are also looking for experienced and driven service technicians with a customer focus, especially those of you with experience of industrial marking equipment or of integrating industrial equipment. We are also always looking for talented development engineers in software, electronics and mechanics for our team, and can offer exciting technology across a broad field and close collaboration within the group with very good development opportunities.
UV-curable ink
How does the technology behind UV-curable ink work?
UV-curable inkjet is based on two components working in direct sequence: a piezo printhead and a UV LED lamp. The printhead uses piezoelectric technology. A crystal deforms when it receives an electrical pulse and thereby ejects a precisely metered ink droplet towards the substrate. This happens without heat, so the ink does not change before it hits the surface. The result is precise droplets in high resolution, up to 360 DPI, that can form text, barcodes, QR codes and graphics directly on the timber. What makes UV ink unique is that it does not dry. It cures. The ink contains photoinitiators that react chemically when they are hit by UV light of the right wavelength (395 nm). The LED lamp, placed directly after the printhead, activates this reaction in milliseconds. The ink polymerises and forms a hard, adhesive layer that sticks to the surface regardless of whether it is porous like sawn wood or smooth like plastic or lacquer. Because curing is instant, there is no drying time, no bleeding into the material and no risk of smearing during further handling. The entire process takes place at full line speed (up to 300 m/min) without production having to slow down.
Sawmills
How is the marking affected by subsequent treatments, such as impregnation?
The UV ink forms a plastic-like surface that withstands harsh chemical environments and wet conditions without the mark disappearing or becoming illegible. If white ink is used, this stands out even more clearly and increases the contrast.
Which quality stamps can you print on timber?
We print all common quality stamps (CE, UKCA, Tp, JAS, IPPC and CMP for painted timber) directly on the flat side and end grain at up to 150 m/min.
Does the system meet the EUDR requirements for forestry traceability?
Yes. The system is future-proof and can generate unique codes (QR, Datamatrix, barcodes) per package automatically, linked to your order data.
Pallets and packaging
Is the ink expensive compared with the electricity cost of branding irons?
While branding irons draw constant power to maintain 600 degrees, an inkjet printer only consumes energy when it prints. An IPPC stamp costs only a fraction of a krona. The big gain lies in an increased production rate and zero waiting time for heating up.
Can we mark on materials other than just solid wood?
Yes. UV ink adheres excellently to plastic blocks, composite blocks, fiber blocks and even uneven or damaged wood, surfaces where branding often works poorly or melts the material.
What happens if the line stops?
In the event of a machine stop, the UV lamp and the ink supply are switched off immediately. There is zero risk of fire. When the line starts again, the system is ready immediately with no waiting time.
Can we print with white ink on blocks that are to be painted (e.g. CHEP or V-EMB)?
Yes, this is a unique advantage. We can print white text on blocks that are subsequently sprayed with or dipped in paint. The white marking retains its readability and contrast even through the paint layer, which is crucial for, for example, CHEP pallets or V-EMB packaging, where the brand and traceability must be clear.
Can we really get white text?
Yes, UV technology allows pigmented white ink. This gives an enormous advantage on dark wood species or when you want to create a white background for a QR code to guarantee readability for scanners.
What does EPAL certification mean for inkjet?
It means that the technology is officially approved by the European Pallet Association as a replacement for branding. Both ink and printer must be specifically approved to be used.
Can you mark both wooden blocks and plastic blocks on the same line?
Yes, the same printer and the same ink work on wooden blocks, fiber blocks, round blocks and plastic blocks, without changing ink.
Can you replace screen printing and printing plates completely?
Yes. Digital direct printing eliminates the cost of printing plates, lead time and stock of pre-printed components. Every print is made dynamically. Logo and content can be changed in a fraction of a second without mechanical intervention.
Can you print ISPM15/IPPC stamps directly on plywood and packaging crates?
Yes. We print ISPM15, IPPC and logos directly on plywood, wooden crates and pallet collars in full process color (CMYK) or with the addition of white (CMYK+W) for clarity on dark surfaces.
How do I know your product will work in our production?
We can carry out print trials directly on your own material in our lab in Mölndal, at realistic line speeds and throw distances. If needed, we also come out to you and do trial installations on site, directly on your production line.
EPS and foam
Can you mark gray EPS?
Yes. Gray EPS is marked with white ink, and with NoLabel ICON we can print a black code on a white background in one and the same pass for maximum contrast.
What should the CE marking on EPS insulation contain?
That is determined by your declaration of performance. Common content is the designation code according to EN 13163, the declared λ value and the batch number. The printer fetches the data per order and changes the text when the lot changes, without new stamps.
Can every fish box have its own traceability?
Yes. Species, catch area, date and lot are printed per box, together with a QR code that can link to the lot's details. Data is fetched automatically from your system.
Does the ink adhere to EPS, and does it withstand cold and moisture?
The UV ink cures directly on the surface and withstands moisture once cured. The result depends on the material and the conditions in production, which is why we always do print trials on your own material under real conditions.
EUDR and Digital Product Passport
What is EUDR and why does it affect companies in the wood industry?
EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation, Regulation 2023/1115) is the EU's deforestation regulation. It requires that wood products sold on the EU market do not contribute to deforestation. Sawmills, pallet manufacturers and other operators in the wood value chain must be able to document the origin of the timber, from harvesting site to finished product. Large and medium-sized companies are covered from 30 December 2026, other small companies from 30 June 2027.
What is a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
A Digital Product Passport is an EU requirement under which every product must carry a machine-readable code (QR or Datamatrix) linking to verified information about origin, materials, environmental performance and traceability throughout the entire life cycle.
What is the difference between DPP and EUDR?
EUDR (the Deforestation Regulation) requires traceability of the wood's geographical origin. DPP (the Digital Product Passport under ESPR) is broader and also requires data on environmental performance, material content, production and social sustainability throughout the entire life cycle.
When will Digital Product Passports become mandatory for wood products?
Pure wood products are expected to be covered in 2028–2030, but since wood is an input to furniture and construction products that are affected as early as 2027, sawmills and wood producers need to be ready earlier.
What type of marking is required for EUDR compliance?
The exact format has not yet been fully determined, but to hold enough information (geographic coordinates, certificate of origin, timestamp and reference number), everything points to Datamatrix or QR codes as the practical answer. These 2D codes can carry significantly more data than a traditional barcode and are already established in similar traceability systems within the EU. Each unit or batch needs a unique identifier.
Why don't labels work on freshly sawn or live timber?
Freshly sawn and live timber has a high moisture content and releases sap and resins that prevent labels from adhering properly. Mechanical handling such as forklifts and sorting conveyors tears labels off, temperature fluctuations during outdoor storage crack the adhesive, and impregnation dissolves both adhesive and ink. A label that comes off creates a gap in traceability, which is not compatible with the EUDR requirement for unique and durable traceability per unit.
How do GSI Nordic's printers solve the problem of marking live wood?
GSI Nordic's UV inkjet printers apply the ink directly into the wood surface, where it is instantly polymerised by UV light and forms a plastic-like film in the wood fiber, not on it. There is no adhesive to dissolve, no material to tear off and no label to lose. The marking withstands impregnation, pressure treatment, wet conditions, cold and prolonged UV exposure. Black and white ink always ensure sufficient contrast for machine reading, even on aged or discoloured wood.
Can GSI Nordic's printers print Datamatrix and QR codes?
Yes. The NoLabel® and Colorize® printers print all common 1D and 2D code symbologies, including Datamatrix and QR code, with high resolution and readability that holds up even at production speeds of up to 200 m/min. The printed code is controlled entirely by the software, which makes it easy to update formats and data content as the EUDR requirements are specified in more detail.
What happens if the requirements for EUDR or DPP codes change after we have invested in equipment?
GSI Nordic's printers are software-based, which means that code format, layout and data content are changed digitally, with no new hardware, no mechanical modifications and no production stoppage. The software can be updated continuously as the requirements are specified. This makes the investment future-proof regardless of what the final rules entail. We know that our ink adheres durably to wood surfaces, that our printers perform in harsh environments, and that our software is built from the ground up to handle rapid change.
Does the marking hold up when the timber is impregnated, stored outdoors or exposed to wet conditions?
Yes. UV-curable ink forms a plastic-like surface directly in the wood fiber that withstands impregnation, wet conditions, UV light and mechanical wear. We print in both black and white, which ensures sufficient contrast for machine reading even on aged, discoloured or impregnated wood. Traceability is maintained throughout the timber's entire life cycle, from sawmill to end user.
Can GSI Nordic's printers mark all types of wood products covered by EUDR and DPP?
Yes. NoLabel® SOLO and ICON are designed for sawmills and mark directly on sawn and planed timber in all dimensions. Colorize® CMYK and CMYK+W are optimized for packaging and pallets. NoLabel® SOLO and ICON are EPAL-approved for marking EUR pallets. The product range thus covers the traceability needs of the entire wood value chain under EUDR and DPP.
How quickly can the printer software be updated if the standards change?
Software updates can be distributed centrally over the network to all connected printers without stopping production. We developed the products we sell ourselves, from the ground up, which means we have full control over the software and the expertise to maintain and improve it. One phone call to Mölndal and we're up and running!
What resolution is needed for QR codes and Datamatrix to be reliably readable on wood?
Wood is an uneven and absorbent surface that places high demands on print precision. GSI Nordic's printers deliver sufficient resolution to achieve maximum readability even on sawn end grain and planed timber, including for small codes. This means the code can be compact enough not to detract from the product's appearance and still be reliably readable with industrial code readers and mobile cameras.
Where can I read more about EUDR and how it affects the wood industry?
Skogsindustrierna (Swedish Forest Industries) has published an EUDR guide specifically for sawmills as well as a quick guide for smaller sawmills (skogsindustrierna.se). Skogsstyrelsen (the Swedish Forest Agency) is the competent authority in Sweden and publishes ongoing updates on the application of the regulation. TMF (Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry) also has a practical quick guide to EUDR compliance. The European Commission's official page is available at europa.eu.
